Let’s Talk About The Positives of ADD and ADHD

According to the DSM-5 (The book in which clinicians and insurance companies use for diagnoses) ADHD and ADD are defined as a neurological disorder defined by impairing levels of attention, disorganization and or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Inattention and disorganization entail inability to stay on task, seeming to not listen, and losing materials necessary for tasks. ADHD into adulthood can potentially impair social, academic, and occupational functioning. Did you know that when you are applying for jobs, if you are diagnosed with ADHD that you can put it down as a disability? There is so much more that can be listed, but there is no reason to get into the fine details right now.

What details we do want to discuss that most conversations do not include are all the positive and benefits of having ADHD and ADD as children and adults. How many times have you ever heard a conversation about the positives or benefits of having a disorder?

Let’s stop and think for a minute when I mention these names, Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Michael Phelps, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Michael Jordan, Simone Biles and Adam Levine. They all have ADD and HDHD, they are all successful in their careers, and they all figured out a way to use the benefits of their “disorder” to create something amazing. Does this disorder create challenges, absolutely, but nobody ever wants to talk about the positive attributes and what it takes to overcome them.

People with ADD and ADHD can have enhanced creativity, are hyper focused, have an abundant amount of energy, are resilience, spontaneous, high ability to problem solve and more.

Let’s break this down even further.


Enhanced Creativity

People with ADHD are often exceptionally good at generating a wide range of ideas and finding unconventional solutions to problems. They have the ability to “Think Outside the Box” and they can approach situations from a unique perspective, allowing them to excel in fields that require innovation and originality.


Hyperfocus

People who have ADHD/ADD, when engaged in something that genuinely interests them, they can demonstrate intense focus and work until completion, often without noticing distractions. This ability to hyperfocus can lead to high levels of productivity in specific areas where others will not be able to keep up with the brilliant minds.


Abundant Amount of Energy

This is what we think of most when we hear and think ADHD, but the energy if used correctly than motivate and Drive individuals with ADHD. When they are able to channel their high energy levels towards achieving goals and pursuing passions the results are endless. The energy can be invigorating, contagious and inspiring to others, both in personal and professional settings.


Resilience

People with ADHD/ADD can overcome challenges and develop resilience through navigating the daily obstacles and learning to manage their symptoms. They are adaptable and often able to bounce back from setbacks and adjust their strategies.


Spontaneity

People with ADHD/ADD have a willingness to try new things. They are Impulsive and can manifest as a positive openness to new experiences and a willingness to break from routine. This spontaneity can make them fun to be around and contribute to engaging conversations.


Problem-Solving Skills

People with ADHD/ADD have an innovative approach and their unique way of thinking allows them to develop creative solutions to complex problems. They can see patterns and may have an innate ability to recognize patterns and connections that others miss.


Other Strengths

Let’s not forget that people with ADD/ADHD may have social intelligence and Empathy. Some studies suggest people with ADHD may have higher levels of social intelligence and empathy. They also may have a higher level of humor and sociability. They are often known for their humor and ability to make others feel comfortable. They also may have strong morals Individuals and value honesty, fairness, and justice.

We need to remember, and it is important that ADHD is a complex condition with both positive and negative aspects. While these strengths are beneficial, they are often accompanied by challenges related to executive functions and regulation. Learning to manage symptoms and harness these strengths effectively can lead to significant personal and professional success. Living with this condition is not easy. It takes a special and unique person to harness these characteristics and traits for positive use. When you read the above list, are some of the strengths that you would want in a CEO, a leader, or someone who will motivate you to be better, do better and level you up.

So, the next time that you think and hear ADHD/ADD, don’t think of it as a disorder or impairment.
